Batteries are everywhere and power seemingly everything. Well, nearly everything, because most people still rely on the grid to supply electricity to their house. But that’s about to change.
Getting energy when you need it
Solar panels are most effective during the day, when the sun is at full blast. Most of us work during the day however, leaving the house empty and all that energy mostly unused. Your energy provider buys that excess energy from you through a so called “feed-in tariff”. Depending on where you live that feed-in tariff is usually around 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
Before and after work we have the lights on, watch TV, charge our phones, do our laundry, have the aircon on, etc. But during the mornings and evenings the sun doesn’t provide as much energy, requiring you to buy back energy from your energy provider to be able to run all your appliances. Often at prices well over 30 cents per kilowatt hour.
That’s right, the energy provider buys your energy from you at around 10 cents, but sells it back to you at three times the price. You’re losing money while on average during the day, your panels might produce more than enough energy to support your energy needs.
While that might seem unfair, the reason is simple: all that energy needs to be stored somewhere until it’s needed, and your energy provider charges you a fee for that service.
Solar during the day, batteries at night
What if you were to store the energy yourself? That way you cut out the middle man that has to make a profit. You generate the energy for free, you store it for free and you use it for free. That’s a lot of free compared to having to pay three times more than what you got paid for that same energy.
That’s why more and more people are starting to install battery packs in their homes. These battery packs are charged during the day and used during the night. That means you no longer have to worry about fluctuations in feed-in tariffs, energy prices or power outages. It’s your house, your solar panels and your energy.
Calculate if it makes sense for you
Battery packs are a significant investment and while they offer a lot of benefits, it doesn’t make sense for everyone to get them installed. In fact, for most people it doesn’t. Not just yet. If you’re looking for a solution that allows you to cut ties completely with your energy provider, batteries are the only way to go. Others might want to keep their connection to the energy provider, but simply want to decrease their dependency and their energy bills. In those cases, it’s important you calculate if the benefits offset the costs. Your solar power retailer will be able to help you with this or ask one of our specialists.
